Secret Place, The 1957 Belinda Lee, Roland Lewis, Michael Brooke, Michael Gwynn London
Director : Clive Donner   Production Company : The Rank Organisation  Region : LONDON R-S

A beautiful redhead becomes involved with a smalltime gang of hoodlums who plan and perform a daring diamond robbery.

Ian Silverton remembers:

"All the cast from the Film used my fathers pub on Gosset Street Bethnal Green, THE WESTMINSTER ARMS. He used to take Belinda Lee and Ronald Coleman to the Astor Club when the pub closed. As a small boy I watched all the filming in Nelson Gardens from the upstairs bedroom windows of my nan's house, No 5. It went on for hours, some of my mates had small parts in the film, i even had a walk on walk off part on the bomb sites."

Secret Place, The - These houses have probably gone, but the large new building in the background? London's East End? Derek Silk writes: As a young boy of 6 or 7 I remember the film crew turning up to film the scenes on the debris opposite to where I lived. This was not a bomb site as you suggest but where houses (slums) had been knocked down to make way later for a block of flats to be built called 'Cobden House' which is still there today. The debris was in between Nelson Gardens and Old Bethnal Green Road, both streets of which are still there today but totally unrecognisable today from the late 50's as all of the houses on my side of the street were also demolished about 10 years later. Old Bethnal Green Road, Bethnal Green.

Secret Place, The - Gone? But not forgotten. Typical cheap Victorian housing. Many now gentrified. Nelson Gardens, Bethnal Green, according to Derek Silk (see above).
At the age of 14 Frank Power watched the actual filming during the July/August of 1956. He confirms that they used a terraced house on Old Bethnal Green Road just up from Mansford St. He had is photo taken with Belinda Lee signing her autograph on the plaster of his broken left ankle.......some chaps get all the luck!

Secret Place, The - Trolley bus junction, and what's that chain link fence near the boy's arm? The sort of thing that appears on canal sides, swing bridges and the like.

Secret Place, The - In The Secret Place feature I spotted Morville Street - my birthplace - in Bow, east London. This is at the junction of Ordell Road - that's Tom Thumbs Arch on the left down where the digging appears to be. When my sister moved to Colchester in Essex, she used to travel home on that very line from Fenchurch Street. Beyond, where the figures are heading is the former Kearly & Tonge warehouse, part of the International Food Stores of the 60's. All flats now, but the road is the same shape and the railway arch and wall are still there. Gary Kent.
