Director : John Durst   Production Company : Realist Films  Region : LONDON O-Q

A young boy finds a magic marble that grants him any wish he wants. One day he wishes for a giant steam-roller, and it starts to trash London.

Greg provided these stills: owtm001, owtm003, owtm006, owtm007, owtm008, owtm009, owtm010. Denys kindly sent in owtm002, owtm004, owtm005, owtm011, but as we haven't a copy of the movie it is a little difficult to comment. More wonderfully detailed information is held on these sites:

East London and Barking in Essex seem to be the locations, with Market Square appearing, but the School......................ummmmmmm.
Perhaps Denys will send in the rest of the pics that he has grabbed so that we can load all those shots with external, architectural details and which contain an actor.
Greg discovered the real site of the school, and he lives a couple of thousand miles away. Now that is serious sleuthing!   And...... Paul Singleton says; The film was shot in Poplar, London E14. Today this is part of the area known as "Tower Hamlets" though that term would have been unknown at the time the film was made. The school used was at the time known as Cardinal Griffin RC Secondary Modern based in Canton St / Upper North St E14. It was a magnificent example of 1950's futurist architecture and conceived as part of the Lansbury Estate re-development after heavy WWII bombing (plus some in WWI also). The school used only became known as Blessed John Roache and St Phillip Howard post around 1972. I attended this school 1967-72 and as far as I can tell from the stills, it remained much the same during my years as it had in the 1950s when the film was made.

Jackie Scott tells us that the steam roller for this film was built on the Isle of Wight by her late father. The family have his original drawing and black and white photographs of it taken outside his workshop.

Stills with a red border do not have a now shot.

One Wish Too Many - Lansbury Road School is a fake sign, says Greg. The school used was St Philip Howard School (Secondary) / The Blessed John Roche Roman Catholic School (Secondary) (both now closed), Upper North Street, Poplar, Tower Hamlets, London, E14 6ER.owtm001.
Paul Singleton tells us; This is one of the entrances from Upper North St into the school. At times in the 1960s, the use of this entrance was prohibited due to concerns over traffic on the road.

owtm001n. Upper North Street, Poplar, Tower Hamlets, found by Greg via Google. Then shot shows the dining room (lower part of block) and what were classrooms and teacher's common room on top. The school was concerted to flats and partly demolished in the earlier years of this century I believe. Paul Singleton

One Wish Too Many - Chrisp Street Market, Poplar. This location and that of OWTM004 is Chrisp St Market (the 'P' is silent locally). As in bath, we understand!

This is about a 5-10 minute walk from the school and was a favourite location for children to hang out at lunchtime (chips, pease pudding etc). Paul Singleton

One Wish Too Many - Building foreground left is the changing toom and shower area (bottom) and upper levels were the main hall's stage.
The poles to the right are the bike sheds (never used at such during my time). Just behind the shed and out of shot is a mound of grass to mark the spot where the high alter of a church had been before it was bombed ibn WWI - 1917 I think. Can't recall if it was a Zeppelin or Gotha Biplane bombers.
A larger number of infant school children were killed in the WWI raid in a school just across the road from the school. At the time it made world-headline news due to its rarity and was considered a war crime.
