Angry Silence, The 1960 Richard Attenborough, Pier Angeli, Michael Craig, Bernard Lee, Alfred Burke London, Suffolk
Director : Guy Green   Production Company : Beaver Films  Region : LONDON A-B,SOUTH EAST A-D

A young factory worker in Ipswich decides to stand up against his work-mates and fellow union members when they want to hold a wildcat strike.

Besides detailed location information Rob Beckwith has also provided some support information from his friends who had connections with the location shooting of the film. One friends father, Sid, worked at Reavell & Co when the film was being made and appears in two segments. One was a background shot with Oliver Reed and the other was of his hand switching off a machine, adding that "The cast were very friendly". Apparently, the Picket Line was going to be shot outside Reavell & Co in Ranelegh Road but it was decided to relocate a mile down the road to Cowell Street instead.

Another friend at the age of seven watched the filming taking place in Tyler Street. He remembers that "They mounted a comers on the corner where a building had been demolished".

Rob Beckwith has also added that before the actual filming took place Richard Attenborough went to Ipswich to be taught how to operate the machine that he worked on during the film.

Sally Ryder has written to say that her grandfather, Percy Lambert was a foreman at Reavells at the time of the filming and he said that the overalls worn by Bernard Lee in the film were actually his because the director decided that the ones provided by wardrobe were too pristine and their statures was along the "same sturdy lines". Why would he not tell the truth?

John Wilson who has resolved some of the Ipswich locations for us remembers waking up as a child one morning to a lot of noise outside of the house where he lived, 82, New Cut West, Ipswich. Outside were several large vehicles which turned out to those used by film crew and actors of this film. With his mother and sister, he watched the scenes where the factory workers walked and cycled to work being shot. These were filmed in Tyler Street and Hawes Street, Ipswich and the factory entrance used was that of Ransomed and Rappers. These streets have long since altered and the company gone. The scene is where Michael Craig is riding the motor cycle through the crowds of pedestrians.
